BASKETBALL: Elida rolls into title game
COLUMBUS — Elida needed just four seconds to take a lead it would never relinquish.
Senior Reggie McAdams flicked the opening tip out to teammate Dakota Mathias, rolled to the basket, took Mathias’ 30-foot alley-oop pass and slammed it hard through the rim.
It was all downhill from there for St. Clairsville as the Western Buckeye League champion Bulldogs rolled to a dominating 61-27 win over the Red Devils in a Division II boys basketball state semifinal Friday at Value City Arena.
Elida will face undefeated Dayton Dunbar (27-0) in the state championship game at 4:30 today.
The Bulldogs blanked St. Clairsville in the first quarter, racing out to a 15-0 lead after eight minutes. The Red Devils played Elida even in the second quarter and trailed 26-11 at the half.
But Cory Royster took over in the third quarter as the Bulldogs pulled away to a 48-20 lead after three, scoring 16 of their 22 third-quarter points in the paint.
St. Clairsville had no answer for Royster or McAdams. Royster dominated the paint, scoring 18 points and pulling down 18 rebounds. McAdams, the Division II co-player of the year in the state, added 17 points and grabbed nine boards.
Elida held Dan Monteroso, who shared player of the year honors with McAdams, to just six points. Monteroso came into the game averaging 26 points per game.
In the other semifinal Friday, Dunbar pulled away from Mentor Lake Catholic for a 75-60 win.
Andre Yates led Dunbar 26 points. Deontae Hawkins added 19 points and grabbed 12 rebounds.
