BASEBALL: Pirates pip Tigers in 8 innings

April 3, 2012

WAYNESFIELD — Coaches say it all the time.

Errors will come back to haunt you.

A seventh-inning error opened the door and the Riverside Pirates barged right through, pulling out a 5-3 win over the Waynesfield-Goshen Tigers in a Northwest Central Conference varsity baseball game Monday at Waynesfield-Goshen High School.

The Tigers held a 3-2 lead and were just three outs from a win when the leadoff Riverside batter reached on an error.  Two outs later, scored on a single to tie the game at 3-all.

W-G’s Eric Shaner drew a leadoff walk in the bottom of the seventh and moved to second on Lake Turner’s sacrifice bunt.  But the Pirates shut down the Tigers threat, striking out the next two batters to send it to extra innings.

Riverside scored twice on three singles in the top of the eighth to take the 5-3 lead.

In the home half of the inning, W-G’s Taylor Schultz banged out a one-out single.  But the Pirates promptly picked off pinch runner Garrett Gilroy.

Ronnie Jarvis then delivered a two-out double, and Garret Miller reached on an error before Cole Sackinger grounded out to end the game.

Jacob Frank took the loss on the mound for W-G.  The senior threw all eight innings, giving up five runs — three earned — on 10 hits while striking out five and walking none.

The Tigers had six hits.  Justus Ball went 2 for 4 and scored a run.  Dylan Little and Jarvis both had doubles.

W-G scored once in the home half of the first and twice in the third.  But the Tigers wouldn’t get a runner past second base the rest of the way.

W-G returns to action at 5 tonight at Allen East.
