Wapakoneta ACME starting pitcher Kodi Morgan threw a four-hit shutout against Celina ACME in his teamâs 2-0 victory Friday at Wapakoneta High School in the regular season finale for the summer baseball league.
Fridayâs game was delayed in the bottom of the sixth inning due to lightning.
The first hit Morgan allowed came in the third inning but that runner was stranded. He gave up two hits in the fourth inning after one out, but retired two straight hitters to escape. His final hit allowed came in the fifth inning with two outs.
Morgan also made three putouts from his position Friday.
Wapak head coach Willie Sammetinger evaluated Morganâs pitching and fielding Friday.
âHe was outstanding,â Sammetinger said. âHe threw strikes and the defense played errorless ball behind him. Thatâs what you hope for.
âA pitcher who fields his position is invaluable,â he said. âKodi did a nice job all around.â
Quinn Lotridge, Wapakâs first batter of the game, singled and scored to give his team a 1-0 lead.
Lotridge stole second base, reached third on a groundout and scored on a sacrifice fly by Chandler Kaeck.
The two teams played three whole scoreless innings until Wapak added another run in the fifth inning.
Metz singled with one out, remained at second base on a botched double play ball, advanced to third on another error by Celina and scored via an RBI single by Jordan Kaeck.
Metz had two of Wapakâs four hits Friday. He also made seven putouts from the shortstop position.
Sammetinger commented on Metzâs performance Friday.â
âThat was Keaton Metzâ best game of the year. He had a good night pitching last night,â Sammetinger said Friday. âTonight he had a good all the way around, both offensively and defensively.â
Wapak managed only four hits Friday after tallying just three Thursday.
Sammetinger expressed concern about his offense entering Sundayâs tournament.
âWeâre not aggressive. The top hand is not coming over, and our weight is out front. Weâre just slapping the ball,â Sammetinger said. âWeâve got to improve that. Weâre going over early Sunday, taking early batting practice and seeing if we can get it going.â
Metz will miss Sunday having left for vacation.
Wapak will face St. Marys in the opening game of the sectional tournament at 3:30 p.m. Sunday at Minster.
