Led by senior Caleb Acheson’s 2-under 34, the Wapakoneta boys golf team beat the Bath Wildcats Thursday afternoon.
A home match for the Redskins at the Wapakoneta Country Club, Acheson and the rest of the Wapak golfers came up with a 5-stroke victory, 157-162, over a strong Bath squad.
“It was a decent day, I didn’t hit the ball as well as I probably could have, putting is definitely what saved me,” Acheson said after his round.
Acheson said he shot a 35 in a tournament earlier in the year, but this home-course 34 was the best he has had this year.
Varsity golf coach Kenny Wayman said he was happy with Acheson’s performance, and low scores by Acheson boost the team overall.
“Caleb is capable of shooting low numbers on any given match,” Wayman said. “When he goes, the team goes.”
Wayman said both teams played very well Thursday.
“Overall, both teams played well,” Wayman said. “Fortunately, we played better.”
For Wapakoneta, Acheson carded a 34, Sophomore Drew Wayman shot a 39, Bobby Crow and Josh Apple both shot a 42.
“Bath is a really good young team and they showed that tonight. They will be right in the thick of things for the WBL title,” Wayman said.
Wayman said these low scores could dictate how the rest of the season goes as they compete for the WBL title.
“I thought for sure in the low 160’s can win tonight at Wapak because typically this course plays difficult. However, I’m pleased how we stepped up tonight to get the win in the 150’s,” Wayman said.View more articles in:
