FOOTBALL: 'Skins blast Chieftains

August 27, 2011

Pretty much the only thing Wapakoneta Redskins football coach Doug Frye was smiling about Friday night was the final score.
Frye’s Redskins trounced the Bellefontaine Chieftains 48-0 in the season opener for both teams at Harmon Field.
Wapak scored 21 points in the final four minutes of the first half to turn a 14-0 game into a rout.
In spite of what the scoreboard read, Frye saw room for improvement.
“I’m happy with the start,” Frye said. “But not pleased.”
The Redskins used two big plays from senior Kevin Kraft and a big game rushing by senior Connor Pickens to pull away to the win.

FOOTBALL: Wapak honors '86 team

Jim Elshire remembers that day in the summer of 1986, the one when senior Kyle Stroh pulled into his driveway and told him the Redskins were going to win the next season.
And win they did.
A lot — becoming only the second Wapakoneta football team to go 10-0 in the regular season and the first to make the playoffs.
Elshire, the coach of that ’86 team, was among the honorees in attendance at a reception and ceremony honoring the team Friday night before the Redskins’ season opener against Bellefontaine at Harmon Field.
Stroh remembers that day too.

FOOTBALL: Triad trips up Tigers

August 27, 2011

WAYNESFIELD — The Triad Cardinals spoiled the Waynesfield-Goshen Tigers’ season opener with a 39-22 win Friday night at Waynesfield-Goshen Tiger stadium.
Big third- and fourth-down plays by the Cardinals hurt the Tigers’ chances for victory.
“The biggest thing is coming up with big plays,” W-G coach Gary Spencer said. “We may have missed tackles but we need to learn from our mistakes and I think we’ll be fine.”

PREP ROUNDUP: Redskins remain unbeaten

August 26, 2011

The Wapakoneta Redskins varsity girls tennis team pushed its record to a perfect 5-0 with a 4-1 win over the Bath Wildcats in a Western Buckeye League match Thursday at the Harmon Park Courts.
For Wapak, Shelby Gillespie posted a 6-1, 6-0 win over Ashlynn Vierra in second singles.
The Redskins’ Annie Harrod swept Madison Pauff 6-0, 6-0 in third singles.
In first doubles, Katie Martin and Kirsten Wellons grabbed a 6-4, 6-3 win over Michelle Hines and Kaitlin Singhaus.
Chloe Veit and Rachel Robert also won for Wapak, topping Darla Wieging and Jardan Hollar 6-3, 6-0 in second doubles.

FOOTBALL: Frye, Redskins focused on Bellefontaine

August 25, 2011

With a difficult Western Buckeye League schedule looming on the horizon, Doug Frye could easily be forgiven for overlooking Week 1 opponent Bellefontaine.
But the second-year Wapakoneta Redskins football coach is not a man who is easily distracted.
Just ask Mrs. Frye.
“One time, about 15 years ago, when I was at Danville High School, we were playing in a tight game, and there was a skydiver that came down on the field that was supposed to hit Mount Vernon’s field and hit Centerburg’s field,” Frye said.

PREP ROUNDUP: Wapak boys lose soccer opener

August 24, 2011

The Wapakoneta Redskins varsity boys soccer team suffered a 4-0 defeat at the hands of the Kalida Wildcats in the Redskins’ season opener Monday at Ryan Field in Wapakoneta.
Kalida took a big early lead with three goals in the first. The Wildcats scored in the 16th, 23rd and 33rd minutes before adding a fourth goal to put the game out of reach less than three minutes into the second half.
Kalida outshot Wapak 20-10 overall and 12-8 on-goal. Colin Mankin and Adam Johnson each had two shots on goal for Wapak but could not convert.
Redskins’ goalkeeper Zach Holtzapple had eight saves.

GIRLS GOLF: Wapak falls to Defiance

August 23, 2011

The Defiance Bulldogs defeated the Wapakoneta Redskins 200-219 in a key Western Buckeye League girls golf match Monday at the Wapakoneta Country Club.
Both teams struggled. But Defiance struggled less as it pulled out the win.
“Everybody seemed kind of sluggish,” Wapak coach Dawn West said. “We were just one step behind all day.”
Shelby Kohler carded a 46 to lead the Redskins and earn medalist honors.
“Shelby played really well,” West said. “She had the opportunity to shoot even lower.”
Courtney Knippen shot a 56, followed by Bryly Beaman with a 57 and Hannah smith with a 60.

PREP: Dogs nip Wapak; Perry edges W-G

August 23, 2011

The Wapakoneta Redskins varsity boys golf team was unable to take advantage of its home course advantage as it suffered a two-stroke loss to the Elida Bulldogs in a Western Buckeye League dual match Monday at Wapakoneta Country Club.
Elida defeated the Redskins 175-177.
“When you play at home, you have to win at home to have a chance at the WBL title,” Wapak coach Ken Wayman said. “I tell the kids every stroke counts in a golf match. We can never assume we are out of a match. We have to always grind it out and play smart golf.

NFL: Horn plays, records reception

August 22, 2011

Waynesfield-Goshen product Joe Horn saw his first game action for the Indianapolis Colts in a 16-3 exhibition loss to the Washington Redskins on Friday at Indianapolis.
With 3:11 left in the game, Horn caught a 12-yard pass to the left from Dan Orlovsky. He picked up a first down on the play. But the Colts were unable to move the chains again in what would be their final possession of the game.
Horn missed the Colts’ first exhibition game with an injury.
