OSU responce to NCAA expected today

July 8, 2011

COLUMBUS (AP) — With the hours dwindling until the deadline for Ohio State’s response to NCAA allegations of improper benefits and a cover up in the football program, athletic director Gene Smith said Thursday that he’s disappointed by “where we are” even as he’s encouraged by the work of the school’s compliance department.
Ohio State is on track to submit its reply today to NCAA charges of major violations that led to coach Jim Tressel’s forced resignation and the departure of star quarterback Terrelle Pryor.

ACME: Wapak holds off Minster for title

July 7, 2011

MINSTER — The Wapakoneta ACME baseball team showed it could make things interesting late — in both the best and worst sense  — during the Auglaize County sectional tournament this week.
But above all the Redskins revealed that they were the county’s best summer baseball team.
Wapakoneta held off a late Minster charge for a 6-5 win in the sectional title game on Wednesday night to finish the tournament unscathed with a 3-0 record with comebacks and close calls throughout.

ACME: Wapak to face Minster

July 6, 2011

MINSTER — A rough start to Tuesday night’s game didn’t deter the Minster ACME baseball team from assuring itself of a trip to the district tournament.

Minster pushed a run across in the bottom of the sixth inning and advanced to the title game of the Auglaize County sectional tournament with a 5-4 win over top-seeded St. Marys at Hanover Street Park.

Wapak, the No. 2 seed, and Minster will battle for the sectional crown tonight at 6. Since the tournament is double-elimination, if Minster wins that game the two teams will play again at 8:15.

ACME: Wapak district-bound

July 5, 2011

MINSTER — Regardless of what happens Wednesday, the Wapakoneta ACME baseball team is headed to the district tournament.

Wapak earned that honor with yet another thrilling, come-from-behind win.

Wapak scored five runs in the top of the seventh inning to rally to a 6-4 win over St. Marys in a sectional semifinal Sunday at Hanover Park in Minster.

“It’s a huge, huge win,” Wapak coach Willie Sammetinger said. “I can’t say enough.”

ACME: Error-prone Wapak escapes with win

July 2, 2011

MINSTER — Two errors is human.
Nine is just ridiculous.
Even when you win.
Wapakoneta almost ruined Brandon Miller’s nearly pristine pitching performance with nine errors but pulled out a 7-6 win over New Bremen in the opening round of the ACME baseball sectional tournament Friday at Hanover Park in Minster.
Miller drove in Josh Apple with a walk-off single in the bottom of the seventh inning to give Wapak the win.
Despite four innings of no-hit baseball, Miller and Wapakoneta trailed 5-4 after four innings.

ACME: Minster rips New Knoxville

July 2, 2011

MINSTER — The Minster ACME baseball team continued its winning ways Friday night as it defeated New Knoxville 23-0 in five innings in the second game of the sectional ACME Tournament held at Minster.
Minster began the game with four runs in the first inning including a two-run home run to left field by Rob Wente. It scored four runs on four hits. Devon Poeppelman and Ryan Hoying also had doubles in the inning.
In the second inning, Minster scored two runs on a wild pitch and a bases-loaded walk to Doug Huber.

MLB: Indians, Reds in different situation now

July 1, 2011

The Indians’ performance against the Giants in San Francisco didn’t raise the optimism level among Tribe fans. It probably didn’t do much to encourage the guys who play, either.
After scoring four runs and being swept in the three-game series at AT&T Park, despite good pitching, it was important to demonstrate a pulse at Chase Field.
And the Indians came through, winning two out of three before heading for Cincinnati to play the last three of this year’s interleague games.

ACME: Wapak wraps up with win

July 1, 2011

CONVOY — Wapakoneta is beginning to master the art of the sixth-inning rally.
And while that may not be good for coach Nick Sammetinger’s blood pressure, it’s good for the win column.
For the second night in a row, Wapak had to come from behind to win, scoring a pair of runs in the sixth inning on its way to a 6-3 win over Crestview in an ACME baseball game Wednesday in Convoy.
On Tuesday, Wapak scored three times in the sixth in a comeback win over New Bremen.

ACME: Wapak rallies to edge New Bremen

June 29, 2011

If Tuesday night was any indication, Wapakoneta’s ACME tournament opener on Friday should be a good one.
Wapak rallied from a three-run deficit to post a 7-5 win over New Bremen at Wapakoneta High School. The two teams are set to face each other when tournament play begins Friday night at 6 at Hanover Street Park in Minster.
Trailing 5-2 after 4 1/2 innings, Wapak scored twice in the bottom of the fifth and three times in the sixth for the come-from-behind win.
