GIRLS SOCCER: 'Skins dodge Defiance

For 48 minutes Thursday night, the score was level.
Then the bubble shifted.
Wapakoneta Redskins sophomore forward Sara Warner scored the lone goal of the night to lead the Redskins to a 1-0 win over the Defiance Bulldogs in a Western Buckeye League girls soccer match at Ryan Field.
Eight minutes into the second half, Warner streaked down the left side of the field and fired a shot across the front of the goal, past the outstretched arms of Defiance goalkeeper Brittany Froelich, and into the right side of the net.

PREP ROUNDUP: Wapak wins girls golf quad

VAN WERT — The Wapakoneta Redskins varsity girls golf team picked up three wins with a quad-match win Thursday at Hickory Sticks Golf Course in Van Wert.
Wapak shot a 195 to best Marion Local (197), Lincolnview (210) and Crestview (210).
The wins lifted the Redskin to 6-8 on the season.
Wapak senior Courtney Knippen carded a 42 to tie Lincolnview’s Kailyn Brant for medalist honors.
Rounding out the scoring for the Redskins were Hannah Smith with a 45, Shelby Kohler — who had just returned from an illness — with a 53 and Bryly Beaman with a 55.

FOOTBALL: 'Skins have their eyes on Celina QB

Time to shift gears.
Again.
Last week it was Bath’s bruising back Aaron Smith.
Friday night it will be Celina Bulldogs quarterback Braden Billger and his arsenal of weapons.
The spread offense is coming back to Harmon Field when the 3-0 Wapakoneta Redskins host 0-3 Celina in a Week 4 Western Buckeye League matchup.
And the Redskins defense could have its hands full with Billger.
The junior quarterback has thrown for 820 yards on 70 of 124 (56.5 percent) with seven touchdowns and three interceptions already this season.
He has thrown scoring strikes to four different receivers.

FOOTBALL: W-G, Fairbanks battle in NWCC opener

WAYNESFIELD — As has been the case for several years now, the game between NWCC foes Waynesfield-Goshen and Fairbanks has determined the league title. This year, it appears to be no different.
“Absolutely,” Waynesfield coach Gary Spencer said. “The road to a league title goes through Fairbanks. The kids know that. They are a great football program.”

BOYS SOCCER: Celina tops Wapak

It took less than 10 minutes for the tide to turn.
And turn it did.
The Celina Bulldogs scored three goals in a span of 9:19 to pull out a 3-2 win over the Wapakoneta Redskins in a Western Buckeye League varsity boys soccer match Tuesday at Ryan Field.
Trailing 1-0 late in the first half, Celina tied it at the 10:07 mark, took a 2-1 lead on an own-goal by Wapak, and stretched it to 3-1 with 48 seconds left in the half.
From there the Bulldogs held on, allowing just an Andy Faller penalty kick in the second half for the 3-2 win.

PREP ROUNDUP: 'Cats edge short-handed 'Skins

The Minster Wildcats posted a 180-206 win over the Wapakoneta Redskins in a varsity girls golf match Tuesday at the Wapakoneta Country Club.
Wapak sent out just four players as No. 2 golfer Shelby Kohler missed her second-straight match with an illness.
Courtney Knippen and Hannah Smith both carded 47’s to lead the Redskins. It was a personal-best round for Smith.
“Even though we did not come out with a win tonight the ladies played much more in control of their games,” Wapak coach Dawn West said. “It was a nice comeback from last night’s match. ...

FOOTBALL: Redskins No. 13 in state poll

Thanks to a 3-0 start, the Wapakoneta Redskins are ranked No. 13 in the first Associated Press state high school football poll released Monday evening.
Wapak is coming off back-to-back Western Buckeye League wins. The Redskins held off Bath 14-13 in Week 3 and defeated Elida, a 2010 playoff team, 29-18 in Week 2.
They routed Bellefontaine 48-0 in the season opener.
The WBL is well represented in the poll. In addition to Wapak in Division II, Kenton is ranked third and Ottawa-Glandorf eighth in Division IV.

PREP ROUNDUP: Wapak boys edge Riders

A miscue on a scorecard hurt the Wapakoneta Redskins but not enough to cost them the win.
Wapak pulled out a 183-185 win over the rival St. Marys Roughriders in a Western Buckeye League varsity boys golf dual match on Monday at Wapakoneta Country Club.
“It wasn’t the greatest score but a win is a win,” Wapak coach Ken Wayman said.
Freshman Drew Wayman was disqualified after signing a scorecard that contained an incorrect score on one of the holes.

VOLLEYBALL: Wapak downs W-G

WAYNESFIELD — Having narrowly won the first set and trailing early in the second, the Wapakoneta Redskins varsity volleyball coach called a timeout.
Redskins coach Keith Rambin challenged his team to play to their potential.
Trailing 5-4 to the Waynesfield-Goshen Tigers moments into the second set, the Redskins worked hard until they finally tied the score at 14-all and took the lead on the next point to gain momentum in the set and the match. They outscored the Tigers 11-4 the rest of the way and won the second game 25-18.

BOWLING: Loschetter wins PBA’s Wintzer Classic

September 12, 2011

Chris Loschetter, of Avon, won the inaugural G.A. Winzter & Son PBA Central Region Classic on Saturday and Sunday at Astro Lanes in Wapakoneta.
Loschetter defeated Dearborn, Mich.’s Jeffrey Roche 216-198 in the championship match.
Roche bested Munster, Ind.’s Eugene McCune 259-179 for the second spot.
Wapakoneta’s Todd Book finished 13th overall.
Book was first after Saturday qualifying with 1,899 pins. He edged Rhino Page, of Dade City, Fla. (1,897) and Loschetter (1,884) for the top spot.
