BASKETBALL: Trojans off to 2-0 start

LEWISTOWN — It will be pretty hard for first-year varsity coach Don Mack and the Botkins Trojans girls basketball team not to improve on last year’s season.

Playing with a new found spark, the Trojans got off to their first 2-0 start in many years with a 47-34 road win over Indian Lake on Tuesday.

SWIMMING: Wapak falls in opener

FINDLAY — The Wapakoneta Redskins varsity boys and girls swim teams opened their seasons with losses in the season-opening meet Tuesday night at Findlay.

Taylor Law posted three wins for the Redskins girls team in a 108-75 loss to the Trojans.

The Wapak boys suffered a 127-52 defeat.

Law won in the 200 IM, 500 freestyle and the 400 free relay.

Joining Law in the 400 free relay were Josie Miller, Stephanie Kessen and Haley Buchanan. The foursome also finished second in the 200 medley relay.

Miller won the 100 freestyle and took second in the 200 IM.

FOOTBALL: Mauk named Mr. Football

COLUMBUS (AP) — When Kenton varsity coach Mike Mauk discusses his son Maty’s record-setting career, he mentions the trip to the Ohio championship game this week, an unprecedented for the school four straight Western Buckeye League titles as well as the program mark of 21 consecutive home wins.

Left unsaid was the litany of national passing records that helped make senior quarterback Maty Mauk a unanimous winner of the 25th annual Associated Press Ohio Mr. Football award.

BOWLING: Redskins remain unbeaten

The Wapakoneta Redskins varsity boys and girls bowling teams are off to matching 2-0 starts after posting wins Saturday at Community Lanes in Minster.

The boys team rolled to a 2,723-2,193 over Marion Local.

Zach Miller bowled a high round of 213 for the Redskins, the fifth-best round of the day in the 16-team event.

Chandler Kaeck turned in a 204. And Luke Manger notched a 186.

The Versailles Tigers are in first place in the West Ohio High School Bowling Conference standings with a 2-0 record and a 971 team average. Wapak is second with a 956 team average.

FOOTBALL: Pickens named first-team All-Ohio

Connor Pickens spent his senior season knocking people over and picking up yards in record-breaking bunches.

Monday, he picked up a major award.

Pickens was named to the Division II All-Ohio First Team offense, which was released by The Associated Press.

Pickens was one of four Wapakoneta Redskins football players honored. He was joined by fellow seniors Chris Schwartz (Second Team offense), Kevin Kraft (Second Team defense) and Brendan Wilson (Third Team defense).

GIRLS BASKETBALL: Tigers hand Patton 100th win at W-G

WAYNESFIELD — The first win of the season for the Waynesfield-Goshen Tigers also was the 100th victory for Ted Patton as the varsity coach of the girls basketball team.

The Tigers grabbed an early lead and continued to build on the score as they defeated the Vanlue Wildcats, 66-38.

The night proved to be made more special as Patton reached the milestone with the Tigers in front of a home crowd as Patton celebrated his victory with his team and friends after the game. Patton has more career wins since he also coached the varsity girls basketball team at Perry High School.
