BASKETBALL: 'Skins strike early

January 9, 2012

Like a boxer, the Wapakoneta Redskins hit with a flurry early to draw first blood and then landed stunning blows in the second half to dispatch of the Kalida Wildcats.

Wapakoneta hit with three quick jabs in the opening stanza en route to a 16-1 first quarter lead as they exchanged landing shots the rest of the way in a 50-39 victory in varsity girls action.

BASKETBALL: Horstman powers New Knoxville past Tigers

January 9, 2012

NEW KNOXVILLE — Behind the 26 points from Haley Horstman the New Knoxville Rangers girl’s basketball team was able to pull away from the Waynesfield-Goshen Tigers for a 61-53 victory Saturday afternoon at New Knoxville.

“New Knoxville has a very good team,” Tigers varsity coach Ted Patton said. “Our kids played hard and didn’t quit and I am very happy with that.”

BASKETBALL: Trojans thump Fairlawn

January 9, 2012

BOTKINS — The Botkins girls came to within one game of evening out their record with a convincing 47-20 win over Fairlawn on Saturday.

The Trojans survived a slow start and held only a 4 point lead after the first eight minutes of play. They dominated from that point and outrebounded the Jets 47-12 to ease their way to the win.

“We were a little slow getting started and you could tell we hadn’t played in a while,” varsity coach Don Mack said. “We had some time off. An ugly win is still a win.”

BASKETBALL: Rangers escape Trojans

January 9, 2012

NEW KNOXVILLE — Six of 11 free throws in the final two minutes allowed the New Knoxville Rangers to escape with a 63-59 victory Saturday evening against the Botkins Trojans in a non-league game at New Knoxville.

"I think we hit just enough free throws to win the game,” Rangers varsity coach Kort Fledderjohann said. “We had the front end of two one and the bonus opportunities and only hit one each time.”

BASKETBALL: Bath dumps Wapak

January 7, 2012

The Wapakoneta Redskins have become quite proficient this season at the fourth-quarter comeback.

So when they walked onto the court down nine points with eight minutes to play Friday night against Bath, there was little cause for concern.

But there would be no comeback this time.

It was too little, too late.

The Bath Wildcats used a balanced offensive attack and took advantage of a lackluster showing by the Redskins to pull away to a 61-47 win in a Western Buckeye League varsity boys basketball game at Wapakoneta High School.

BASKETBALL: Trojans rally to edge Fort Loramie

January 7, 2012

BOTKINS — The Botkins Trojans varsity boys basketball team returned to action Friday night and rallied for a fourth-quarter comeback win over the Fort Loramie Redskins.

The Redskins led for the first three quarters but couldn’t quite hold on as Botkins stole the lead in the final minutes and came out with a 58-51 victory in a Shelby County League battle at Botkins High School.

The Redskins were only up 25-23 at the half but outrebounded the Trojans the entire first half.
Fort Loramie’s intensity allowed it to pull away 37-31 starting into the third quarter.

WRESTLING: Redskins sweep WBL tri-match

January 6, 2012

ELIDA — Wins are nice, but Wapakoneta Redskins varsity wrestling coach Jason Rostorfer was looking for more than just wins on Thursday night.

He got both as the Redskins swept Elida and Defiance in a Western Buckeye League tri-match at Elida High School.

Wapak edged Elida 38-30 in the opener then rolled past Defiance 48-25 in the second match.

BASKETBALL: Kittens clip Wapak

January 6, 2012

BATH TOWNSHIP — Controlling the boards can be just as important as putting the rock through the net in basketball and Wapakoneta found out that lesson the hard way in its 55-36 loss to Bath in a key Western Buckeye League matchup Thursday night.

By outrebounding the Redskins, 36-18, the Wildkittens overcame a subpar offensive night to stave off a determined yet frustrated Redskin squad which continually watched Bath get two and some time three shots at scoring by snaring carom after carom.

BASKETBALL: Wildcats await Wapak

January 5, 2012

If Wapakoneta’s matchup against Bath is anything like the last two, you might want to plan ahead.

This one could get late.

The past three Redskins/Wildcats contests have gone to overtime, with Bath ultimately prevailing in each.

So when the Wildcats (5-3, 0-1 WBL) come to Wapakoneta High School for a Western Buckeye League varsity boys basketball contest on Friday, it should be interesting.

“I would expect a close, physical, hard-fought battle,” Redskins varsity coach Matt Bradley said. “Hopefully we can stop that trend of Bath winning close games against us.
