New coach familiar with high expectations

CRIDERSVILLE — Sporting red Wapakoneta jerseys adorned with their last name in white on the back, the Moyer children understand their father is coaching football again.

Travis Moyer was hired Tuesday as head varsity football coach at Wapakoneta High School, returning to coaching after two seasons.

Moyer was hired Tuesday by the Wapakoneta City Schools board of education at Cridersville Elementary School in its regular monthly meeting.

Moyer will now return to coaching after being away from football for two seasons.

Celina strong early in sectional win over Wapakoneta

LIMA — The Celina Bulldogs were good for long enough Tuesday in their sectional win over the Wapakoneta Redskins.

They took control of the game early, and despite some sloppy play late, handled themselves after a heartbreaking loss to end the Western Buckeye League season.

Celina earned a 54-41 victory Tuesday over Wapakoneta in a Division II boys basketball sectional semifinal at Lima Senior High School.

Tuesday’s game was the opposite of the two schools’ WBL meeting in January.

3 Redskins qualify for state wrestling meet

With two teammates having already clinched state tournament berths, Wapakoneta Redskins junior Colton Brown nabbed a 2-1 win on an ultimate tiebreaker to join Dallas Ambos and Landon Hall at the state meet in Columbus this week.

Three of Wapak’s four district qualifiers advanced to state for the first time, while junior Heath Newman finished fifth and is an alternate for the state meet.

The Redskins concluded the two-day Division II district wrestling tournament Saturday at the Stroh Center on the campus of Bowling Green State University.

Redskins shut down Elida to win sectional

SPENCERVILLE — The Wapakoneta Redskins held the Elida Bulldogs scoreless in the second period Saturday, the impact from which could be felt the rest of the game.

The Redskins went from a 10-6 first-period lead to a 23-6 advantage at halftime.

Not only did the shutout in that period allow the Redskins to build their lead before halftime but it gave them the benefit of the game’s time being on their side, too.

Wapak’s lead hovered between 15 and 20 points for much of the second half, never having it threatened by Elida.

Redskins win sectional bowling tournament

The long trip to northern Ohio was well worth it.

The Wapakoneta Redskins made the more than two-hour trip to Star Lanes at the Harbor in Port Clinton and returned to Auglaize County with a sectional championship.

Wapak won the Division I boys bowling sectional tournament Friday and qualified for the district tournament. After three games and six Baker matches, Wapak had the top score (3,878) among 13 teams.

The top four teams from each sectional advanced to this Saturday’s district tournament.

Wapakoneta’s Kaeck qualifies for districts

Wapakoneta Redskins freshman Josee Kaeck put together her best average of the season Saturday and it advanced her to districts.

The Redskins as team, however, were 19 pins shy of qualifying for districts, as they finished fifth Saturday at their sectional tournament needing a top-four effort to advance in the state tournament.

The Redskins totaled 2,971 pins after three games and six Baker matches Saturday in a Division I sectional tournament at Star Lanes at the Harbor in Port Clinton.

Wapakoneta's Sutton, Miller finish state competition

Two Wapakoneta Redskins underclassmen will get another chance next season, as Charlie Sutton and Josie Miller concluded their appearance at the state swimming championships Friday.

Each qualified from Thursday’s preliminaries to the B-finals Friday as part of the two-day Division II state championships at C.T. Branin Natatorium.

Sutton qualified from the final spot in prelims Thursday and then improved on his prelims time by one-tenth of a second Friday.

The sophomore posted a time of 22.08 seconds Friday in the 50-yard freestyle to finish 13th.

School board to vote on new football coach

Travis Moyer will be recommended for approval to be hired as the new head varsity football coach at Wapakoneta High School, it was announced Thursday afternoon in an email from Wapakoneta City Schools Athletic Director Brad Rex.

Members of the Wapakoneta City Schools board of education will vote on the recommendation Tuesday at their monthly meeting at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, at Cridersville Elementary School in Cridersville.

Rex said Thursday night Moyer plans to attend the board meeting.

Wapakoneta's Culver commits to play at Northern Ky.

Wapakoneta High School senior Chace Culver made a verbal commitment to play college baseball at Northern Kentucky University, according to WHS varsity coach Jason Brandt.

Culver is a right-handed pitcher listed at 6 feet, 3 inches, 180 pounds.

He was a third-team All-Western Buckeye League selection in 2013.

Brandt said Culver has yet to sign a National Letter of Intent, which would formalize Culver’s commitment to the college.

W-G rolls Ridgemont to open tournament

KENTON — A fast-paced, energized start by the Waynesfield-Goshen Tigers helped them cruise to a 70-27 win Tuesday over the Ridgemont Golden Gophers in a Division IV girls basketball sectional semifinal at Kenton High School.

In a matchup of two Northwest Central Conference teams, the Tigers shot out to a 21-1 lead after the first period, as Kenzie Jarnagin hit a 3-pointer at the buzzer for her seventh point in the opening period.
