Redskins come up short, comeback stopped in last seconds of game

ELIDA —  In a hard-fought battle where offense was in the spotlight in the first half, and defense in the second, the Wapakoneta Redskins had one shot to overcome a 14-point deficit against the Elida Bulldogs.

Senior quarterback Kyle Gibson looked at the clock. It read 36 seconds. The score was 21-14. No time outs and the Redskins had the ball at the Elida 28-yard line.

The Wapakoneta Redskins may not have played very well Thursday, but they played well enough to escape with home sweep against the Elida Bulldogs.

The Bulldogs committed 30 unforced errors in the 3-0 sweep which saw the Redskins win 25-21, 25-23 and 25-17 in varsity volleyball action.

ELIDA —  The Wapakoneta High School varsity boys soccer team travelled to Elida Thursday for a physical match that ended in a 0-0 draw.

Eighty minutes of tough soccer left fans from both teams cheering back and forth down to the last seconds of the match. 

This was the Redskin’s first match in the Western Buckeye League, and with this tie moves to 1-0-2 on the season.

W-G vball loses close battle with Delphos Jefferson

WAYNESFIELD – The Waynesfield-Goshen High School volleyball team battled hard before coming up on the short end of a marathon 25-23, 18-25, 26-24, 11-25, 11-15 loss to Delphos Jefferson Monday.

The two teams battled for two hours and 40 minutes before action was finally over.

Despite the loss, Waynesfield head coach Kelly Dunson said the team showed drastic improvement over its first game played Saturday at Botkins.

Botkins volleyball falls to New Bremen

NEW BREMEN — The New Bremen Cardinals volleyball team picked up their first victory of the season Monday evening as they defeated the Botkins Trojans in three games 25-11, 25-14 and 25-21 in a non-league match played at New Bremen.

“I thought they played well tonight, but we still have things to work on,” Cardinals head coach Theresa Jenkins said. “I thought we were able to roll with the punches pretty well tonight.”

‘Skins defend home course with win

The Wapakoneta boys golf team defended their home course with a 163-191 victory over Shawnee.

Varsity head coach Kenny Wayman said there were some tough conditions Monday that his boys were able to fight through.

“We will take that score and the win today under some tough conditions.  It was really windy and some rain involved.  The scores were a little high today from both teams,” Wayman said. “However, shooting a 163 today under those conditions, we will take any day.”

Redskins defeat Sidney in opener

The Wapakoneta Redskins opened their volleyball season with a 3-0 win against Sidney Monday night.

Winning the first three sets 25-14, 25-15, 25-18, Varsity head coach Keith Rambin said he was pleased with the way his team played.

“First game of the seaon, you never know what’s in store for the first game of the season,” Rambin said. “I was a little worried about Sidney because I know they had been improving, and they got a new volleyball player this year. I was a little worried.”

Trojans beat W-G in opener

BOTKINS - In a game where both teams brought comparable firepower to the front line, it was the little things that made the difference as Botkins opened the season with a 25-9, 25-27, 25-12, 25-16 win over Waynesfield-Goshen Saturday.

Botkins served at a 98 percent clip with 20 aces and passed the ball more efficiently to set up top hitters Logan Pitts and Rachelle Maurer as they found themselves in control most of the time.

Wapak’s Acheson wins tournament

The Wapakoneta varsity boys golf team travelled to Springbrook for an 18-hole invitational, and senior Caleb Acheson walked away with an individual first place finish.

Out of 126 golfers, Acheson stood alone at No. 1 shooting a 70 Saturday morning. The team finished in fifth place, shooting a 330. Winning the tournament was Kalida with a score of 314.

Delphos Jefferson overpowers W-G in opener

WAYNESFIELD—  Waynesfield-Goshen varsity football coach Gary Spencer did not keep it secret that the Tigers needed to play mistake-free football to win the season opener against Delphos Jefferson Friday.

They managed to do it for a half, but three costly turnovers in the second half led to their undoing in a 38-17 loss.
