Botkins girls crushed by Russia

RUSSIA —  The Botkins girls basketball team was coming off a  strong performance Saturday night at Ridgemont, with a lot of confidence heading into a key Shelby County League game, but the confidence didn’t carry over Monday night against the Russia Raiders.  

The Trojans fell hard 46-20 to the Raiders.  

Varsity coach Don Mack was stunned by the performance.

Martin wins Top Gun Championship

The Wapakoneta Redskin high school wrestling team traveled to Alliance, Ohio this past Friday and Saturday for the Top Gun Tournament, and one Redskin wrestler brought home top honors.

John “JT” Martin earned first place in the 106-pound weight class to bring home an individual championship for Wapakoneta.

GIRLS BASKETBALL: Eagles cruise past Redskins

The Wapakoneta girls basketball team was overpowered by the visiting Liberty Benton Eagles, as they fell, 54-36.

Liberty Benton’s Katie Simon had 28 points on the night, dominating the paint. Simon’s play was not limited to the paint, as she was able to step back and hit a couple 3-pointers.

Wapakoneta varsity coach Rusty Allen said Simon’s play was the focus of their pregame preparation.

Missed free throws doom Redskins in Kalida

KALIDA — Hitting free throws in late games is key to pulling out close victories, and the Wapakoneta girls basketball team fell victim to bad shooting down the stretch.

The Redskins missed the front end of three 1-and-1 opportunities and several more free throws in a 46-45 loss to the Kalida Wildcats.

Redskins overpowered by Bath in WBL matchup

Other than the early moments of the game, the closest the Wapakoneta Redskins could have gotten to the Bath Wildcats was trailing by six points at half-time.

With Bath leading 23-15, senior guard Alex Greve drained a shot from the foul line as the buzzer sounded but the referee waved off the shot and the gap remained at eight.

Redskins send 5 to day 2 of wrestling tournament

BRECKSVILLE —  The Wapakoneta high school wrestling team traveled more than 3 hours this past weekend to participate in the 52nd Brecksville Holiday Tournament.

The Brecksville tournament is the longest running holiday tournament in the country in which 45 teams compete over a two-day period.  

The Redskins had five wrestlers make it to Day Two of wrestling.

Playing on the edge: Wapak slides by Bluffton

Despite an offensive and defensive strategy to keep the ball out of Wapakoneta’s “Big 3,” the Redskins boys basketball team pulled out a win over the visiting Bluffton Pirates Tuesday, 37-26.

The Pirates, knowing they were out-sized and not as athletic as the Redskins, held the ball for minutes at a time on the offensive end.

Patton, Tigers squeak by Trojans

BOTKINS — Aided by a costly technical foul down the stretch, the Waynesfield-Goshen girls basketball team was able to steal a victory from the Botkins Trojans Monday night.

Led by senior Kaylee Patton who netted a game-high 23 points on the night, the Tigers won the game, 49-46.

With the score tied at 40 a piece in the fourth quarter, Patton went up for a shot and was fouled. Botkins head coach Don Mack disagreed with the call, and let the referees know about it. 

Big shot Saturday: Greve hits big shot for the win

The score was tied at 46. 

Wapakoneta had been consistently trailing the entire game. 

When the visiting St. Henry Redskins turned the ball over with about 40 seconds left, Wapakoneta varsity boys basketball coach Matt Bradley knew what he wanted to do.

“We wanted to play for the last shot. I thought we did a tremendous job being patient, and running the play we wanted to run,” Bradley said. “(Alex Greve) came open off of a great screen.”
