OTTAWA — The Redskins attempt to take down Defiance for the league title came up short.

Wapakoneta had eight wrestlers reach the finals, with three of them — Tyler Copeland, Dallas Ambos and Landon Hall — winning their weight class. Ten of the 12 wrestlers the Redskins came to the tournament with placed in the top four.

OTTAWA — The Titans sustained a nine-point lead they had at halftime and held off the Redskins when they cut their deficit to five points, 50-45, inside 4 minutes left in the Western Buckeye League game.

Noah Bramlage paced Ottawa-Glandorf (11-5, 4-2 WBL) with 17 points. Adam Henderson led Wapakoneta (9-9, 2-4 WBL) with 15.

In a meeting between two teams with one league loss, the visiting Ottawa-Glandorf Titans surged in the second half with a 12-0 run after a 20-19 contest late in the first half.

The Titans (17-2, 6-1 WBL) led by 22 points in the second half against the host Redskins (14-4, 5-2 WBL), which snapped a five-game winning streak Thursday.

ST. PARIS — The Redskins competed with voids in the three heaviest weight classes Wednesday in the second week of the OHSAA state dual team tournament.

In the final league dual match of the season, in a meeting between two 8-0 teams, Defiance prevailed Tuesday at Wapakoneta High School.

The two teams will compete again Saturday in the Western Buckeye League championships in Defiance.

Bly to sign with Ashland football

FOOTBALL

Waynesfield-Goshen senior Brandon Bly will sign a National Letter of Intent to play at Ashland University on Wednesday, which is National Signing Day for high school recruits looking to play at an NCAA school.

Bly participated in the Blue-Grey All-American Game last month in Tampa, Fla.

Watt ties school record; Redskins top Bellefontaine

BELLEFONTAINE — Megan Watt tied a school record with seven made 3-pointers Monday in a non-league win over Bellefontaine.

Watt had 21 points for the game from the seven 3s. Carly Buzzard added 12 points for Wapakoneta.

DEFIANCE — Wapakoneta won its first Western Buckeye League title in school history today. Redskins coach Mark Law was named WBL Coach of the Year.

Defiance 56, Wapakoneta 48

The state-ranked Defiance Bulldogs broke through in the fourth quarter, ending the Wapakoneta Redskins' upset bid in a Western Buckeye League matchup.

Wes Detter hit six 3-pointers and scored 21 points as Defiance (14-1, 4-1) — the No. 9 team in Division II — used a 12-0 run to start the fourth quarter to help defeat Wapakoneta (8-7, 2-3).

Jarrett Koch and Ethan Good scored 12 points each to lead the Redskins.

Schlegel earns league's top monthly honor

Wapakoneta native and 2010 Wapakoneta High School graduate Heidi Schlegel was named Friday a Horizon League Scholar-Athlete of the Month for December.

Schlegel is a women's basketball player completing graduate school at Youngstown State University.
