Wapak moves to 4-0 with win in home opener

The Wapakoneta Redskins were sound in all phases of Friday’s game, as they rolled to a 38-6 win over the Bath Wildcats in their home opener, a Western Buckeye League varsity football contest at Harmon Field in Wapakoneta.

The Redskins’ starting defense held Bath’s starters scoreless, the offense had zero turnovers and finished scoring drives, and a couple special teams plays stood out, as state-ranked Wapakoneta cruised to its fourth straight win to begin the season.

Rams blank W-G in NWCC opener

McGUFFEY — Friday’s game against Upper Scioto Valley was not the way the Waynesfield-Goshen varsity football team wanted to open play in the Northwest Central Conference.

Not only were the Tigers (1-3, 0-1 NWCC) beat handedly by the Rams (2-2, 1-0) 28-0 in McGuffey, but they were outgained 358 yards to 152 in total offense, 273 to 85 through the air, racked up a season-high 11 penalties for 110 yards and converted just 2 of 17 on third down.

‘Skins to make home debut after 3 road games

The Wapakoneta Redskins varsity football team is really starting to enter the grind that is the 10-game regular season schedule, as each week’s game seems to arrive sooner than the one before.

The Redskins’ coaching staff was not fully operable until June this year, as first-year head coach Travis Moyer assembled a new mix of assistants.

The team has been working through the process of getting acclimated with new people and philosophies while trying to be as competitive as possible on Friday nights.

Tigers open NWCC slate with budding rivalry vs. USV

McGUFFEY — With non-conference competition out of the way, the Waynesfield-Goshen varsity football team will begin play against Northwest Central Conference foes. For the Tigers, conference play will begin Friday at McGuffey against the Upper Scioto Valley Rams.

“We had a close game against them last year, and it has been a solid rival for the program in the last two seasons, so there is some extra motivation just because of who we are playing,” Tigers coach Tyler Turner said. “Our kids want to beat Upper.”

County tournament successful in debut

A long-awaited event debuted this past weekend, and it was very successful in its inaugural year.

The Auglaize County Open Championship — a golf tournament among players from the county’s three courses — was held Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Wapakoneta Country Club, Arrowhead Golf Club and Minster and Prairie View Golf Club in Waynesfield each hosted one day of the tournament.

Prairie View’s Doug Spencer said executing the idea for the tournament took less than one year, it was a routine desire among the county’s golfers.

Redskins’ defense dominates in shutout of Elida

ELIDA — Although the stadium lights didn’t do their job for a brief time Friday, the spotlight shined brightly all night long on the Wapakoneta Redskins’ defense.

Wapakoneta held the Elida Bulldogs scoreless, allowed only three first downs and 66 yards of total offense while forcing three turnovers in the Redskins’ 17-0 shutout of the Bulldogs in a Western Buckeye League varsity football contest at Elida High School.

Mechanicsburg shuts out Tigers

MECHANICSBURG —  The Waynesfield-Goshen varsity football team has played clean football so far this season giving the ball away once heading into its non conference match against Mechanicsburg.

That changed Friday night as the Tigers coughed up the ball four times, leading to 21 unanswered points as W-G dropped to 1-2 on the season after a 48-0 defeat to the Indians.

Bath defeats Wapakoneta in matchup of unbeatens

LIMA — Two undefeated teams early in the 2014 varsity girls soccer season met for a Western Buckeye League showdown Monday.

The Wapakoneta Redskins and the Bath Ladycats — programs which are trending positively in recent years — were each 6-0-0 and receiving votes in the state coaches poll entering the game Monday.

Wapakoneta scores late to beat Kenton

KENTON — For the several hundred fans who were unable or unwilling to return to Kenton for the remainder of the suspended game Saturday afternoon, well, life is full of regrets.

The final 18-plus minutes of the resumed varsity football game between Wapakoneta and Kenton was a classic finish, one that saw the Redskins score a go-ahead touchdown with 6.7 seconds left in the game to steal a 15-14 win in the Western Buckeye League opener at Kenton High School’s Robinson Field.

Wapakoneta game postponed until 2 p.m. today

KENTON — The varsity football game between the Wapakoneta Redskins and the Kenton Wildcats was postponed Friday due to impending inclement weather.

It will resume at 2 p.m. today back at Kenton High School’s Robinson Field.

The game was stopped with 6 minutes and 26 seconds remaining in the third quarter after game officials spotted lightning.

Both teams headed to their respective locker rooms.
