Bath tops Wapak to win district title

PAULDING — The Wapakoneta Redskins managed to hold a one-point halftime lead, 18-17, before the Bath Wildkittens zoomed past the Redskins with a 21-8 advantage in the third period to effectively seal their fifth straight district title.

The Wildkittens tallied a 51-34 win Saturday in a high school girls basketball Division II district final at Paulding High School.

Madison Dackin had 20 points for Bath (23-1), which will face Rogers in a regional semifinal Tuesday.

Megan Watt led Wapakoneta (18-7) with 13 points.

3 Wapak wrestlers advance to state

Wapakoneta wrestlers Tyler Copeland, Heath Newman and Landon Hall each qualified for the state championships Saturday after placing in the top four at districts.

Redskin bowlers qualify for state championships

Wapakoneta High School's girls and boys bowling teams qualified for state today after placing first at their respective district tournaments.

The girls will make their state appearance at 10:30 a.m. Friday at Wayne Webb's Columbus Bowl in Columbus.

The boys will make theirs at the same time and place Saturday.\

4 Redskins reach district semifinals

All seven of Wapakoneta’s district qualifiers are still alive for bids to the state tournament. Four of them are in the championship semifinals after the first day of district action Friday in a Division II tournament at Mansfield Senior High School.

Tyler Copeland, Heath Newman, Landon Hall and Jayden Hefner can qualify for state with at least one win in each of their first two matches today.

Dallas Ambos, Brad Beemer and Dylan Plaugher will begin today’s action in the consolation brackets.

Wapakoneta boys basketball advances to districts

MOUNT BLANCHARD — Keaton Metz exploded for 22 points, as the Wapakoneta Redskins handled the Upper Sandusky Rams in a 60-44 victory Friday in a high school boys basketball sectional final at Riverdale High School.

The Redskins (12-11) will face Western Buckeye League rival St. Marys (15-8) in a district semifinal at 8 p.m. Wednesday at Liberty-Benton High School in Findlay.

Metz had four 3-pointers in the win. Corey Crawford (11) and Ethan Good (10) also reached double figures in scoring Friday for Wapakoneta.

Wapakoneta’s Henderson on league’s 1st team

Wapakoneta Redskins senior Adam Henderson was one of seven players to appear on the Western Buckeye League’s first team, as the WBL announced its all-league selections Thursday.

Henderson is the leading scorer for the Redskins this winter, which has included a season-high 37 points in a double overtime win against Sidney.

Last season Henderson was an honorable mention selection in coach Doug Selvey’s inaugural season with Wapakoneta.

4 Redskins collect all-league honors

Four members of the Wapakoneta Redskins varsity girls basketball team made the Western Buckeye League’s end-of-season selections, as the WBL announced Thursday its all-league teams for the 2014-15 season.

Redskins senior forward Carly Buzzard was a first-team All-WBL choice for this season.

Wapakoneta junior point guard Maddi Stiles made the league’s second team list.

Redskins senior wing Megan Watt was a third-team choice in the WBL.

'Skins top Wauseon, enter rematch with Bath

PAULDING — The Wauseon Indians rallied to take their first lead of the game midway through the fourth quarter but the Wapakoneta Redskins collected themselves and fought off the Indians' comeback effort.

Wapakoneta won 48-45 in a high school girls basketball Division II district semifinal Thursday at Paulding High School.

With the win, the Redskins advanced to the district championship game, where they will face fellow Western Buckeye League foe and four-time defending district champion, Bath. The two teams met last season in the same game.

Knippen has big day in doubleheader

Ashley Knippen (Wapakoneta 2012) went 5 for 8 at the plate Wednesday in a doubleheader for the Bluffton University Beavers softball team.

Knippen had two singles and scored twice Wednesday in the Beavers’ 13-10 win over Mount St. Marys in Cape Coral, Fla.

In the second game, Bluffton run-ruled Northland College, 17-4, in five innings.

Knippen batted twice in the Beavers’ nine-run first inning against Northland, tallying a bunt single and a two-run home run.

School selling tournament tickets in advance

Wapakoneta High School will be selling tournament tickets in advance for its girls and boys games.

Tickets for the girls district semifinal game Thursday against Wauseon will be on sale from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday at WHS. Tickets for the boys game Friday against Upper Sandusky will be on sale from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Thursday and Friday at WHS.

Tickets for both games cost $6 for adults and $4 for students. Tickets at the door for both games will cost $6.

WHS receives a portion of each ticket sold in advance.
