Gardens take on new look

Volunteers and employees of The Gardens at Wapakoneta are seeking to make the retirement center more properly live up to its name through an ongoing landscaping project.

“It’s called The Gardens so we’re trying to make the landscape look more like that with more garden-type areas,” The Gardens at Wapakoneta housekeeper Carol Prater said.

Jamboree promises fun for all

It all started as an ice cream social 50 years ago.

Today, however, residents of Cridersville and surrounding areas recognize it as the Annual Firemen’s Jamboree, a mainstay for the month of July.

The jamboree will run from 4 p.m. Friday, July 11 to about  midnight on Saturday, July 12.

Chief of the Cridersville Fire Department, Rick Miller, said the annual jamboree has continued to grow throughout the 50 year existence.

Fawn L. Carnes Purtee, 48

Fawn L. Carnes Purtee, 48, of Alger, formerly of Wapakoneta, died at 3:55 a.m. on Thursday, July 3, 2014, at University of Toledo Medical Center. She was born Dec. 17, 1965, in Lima, to Richard E. and Naomi R. Morlock Carnes. Her mother survives in Wapakoneta. On July 10, 1997, she married Jim Purtee, who survives.

She is also survived by children, Shelby, Kyle and Jesse, all at home; a brother, Victor Carnes, of Michigan; and a sister, Tami Zwez, of Wapakoneta.

Karen S. Wireman, 56

July 7, 2014

Karen S. Wireman, 56, of Wapakoneta, died at 1:06 p.m. on Friday, July 4, 2014, at her residence. She was born Feb. 13, 1958, in Lima, the daughter of Lawrence and Patricia (Reier) Watters, who preceded her in death. On Sept. 15, 1979, she married John Wireman, and he died Dec. 28, 2009.

Survivors include, a son, Joe (Andrea) Wireman, of Wapakoneta; two granddaughters, Savannah and Delani Wireman; a brother, Eric (Deb) Watters, of Celina; numerous sisters-in-law, brothers-in-law, nieces and nephews.

Arthea G. ‘Kitty’ Ziegler, 77

July 7, 2014

Arthea G. ‘Kitty’ Ziegler, 77, of Summerville, Ga. and formerly of Wapakoneta, died at 1:35 p.m. on Tuesday, July 1, 2014, at Redmond Regional Hospital. She was born April 26, 1937, in Lima, to the late Arthur Monroe and Grace Davidson Bowersock. She is preceded in death by three husbands, Gordon Rick, Bob Wells and Jan Ziegler.

St. Joe Festival

One young mother traveled to Wapakoneta on Thursday to share her memories of the St. Joe Festival with her children.
Megan Mottet, of Marysville, who grew up as a parish member of St. Joseph Church, brought her two boys, Brice, 3, and Xavier "Zeke" Mottet, 1, to the festival for the first time.
"This is a special something for me to bring my kids back to, to say 'this is a part of me,'" Motett said. "In Marysville, there's not really a part of my roots. But this is a part of my roots that I can bring them back to and share with them."

New county administrator hired

The Auglaize County Board of Commissioners on Thursday hired Wapakoneta native Erica Preston as County Administrator.
Preston, 32, previously was a licensed practicing attorney in Columbus, according to Commissioner John Bergman. She now resides back in Wapakoneta.
Bergman said her starting salary will be $65,000 per year. Her first day will be no later than July 28, depending on how soon she can get free of obligations to her present position, Bergman said.

Lightning tops LEPC discussion

At the bi-monthly meeting of the Local Emergency Planning Committee (LEPC) Wednesday morning, the topic of recent lightning storms was discussed.

Director of Auglaize County’s Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Management, Troy Anderson, said some of the recent events were quite entertaining, providing decent light shows, and damages seem to be minimal.

Driver found in creek

A driver was was found injured and partially under her vehicle in a creek following an accident at the intersection of National Road and Mudsock Road at 8:52 a.m. on Wednesday, July 2, in Cridersville.

Driver Donna Lotz, 84, of Wapakoneta, was traveling northbound on Mudsock Road in a red 2004 Honda Accord when she failed to stop at a stop sign and was struck by a 1995 Mack dump truck traveling west on National Road.

The Honda overturned and came to rest in a creek. Lotz was ejected from her vehicle, which came to rest partially on top of her.

Urgent Care offers quick care

The newly opened urgent care center in Wapakoneta says patients can expect “quick, quality care” for common illnesses, preventative services and physicals, seven days a week.

Walk In Urgent Care & Job Care Services, located at 1321 Bellefontaine St., Wapakoneta, Suite 100, opened its doors to the community in April. Walk In Urgent Care has 10 locations in Ohio. The facility is privately owned by Mazhar Hussain, M.D.
