Redskins tie Celina, finish 2nd in WBL

CELINA — A case of the Mondays.

Needing a win to clinch the Western Buckeye League title outright, the Wapakoneta Redskins varsity boys soccer team fell short Monday, as a 2-1 loss to the Celina Bulldogs gave the league championship to the St. Marys Roughriders in back-to-back seasons.

This year Wapakoneta went 7-1-1 in WBL play, finishing as runner-up in the league for the second straight season. St. Marys, meanwhile, was 7-0-2 again in 2014 and gave the Redskins their only league loss this season — on a Monday.

Regina M. Ritter, 91

Regina M. Ritter, 91, of Wapakoneta, died at 4:48 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 10, 2014, at Auglaize Acres. She was born Jan. 8, 1923, in Auglaize County, the daughter of William P. and Cora A. (Presar) Ritter, who preceded her in death.  

Survivors include a sister-in-law, Jean Ritter, of Wapakoneta, a nephew and three nieces.

She was preceded in death by three brothers, John, Marion and Frederick “Fritz” and a sister, Hilda Ritter.

Busy day for Sister Cities

The Auglaize County Historical Society and Sister Cities of Wapakoneta sponsored a program entitled “Historic Indians of Ohio” by Randall Buchman on Monday at the Wapa Theatre.

The presentation was created for the Sister City visitors from Lengerich, Germany, however it was free and open to the public. It turned out to be a popular program, as brochures outlining the history of the Shawnee had to be redistributed to ensure that all attendees received a copy.

W-G approves 5-year forecast

WAYNESFIELD — The Waynesfield-Goshen Board of Education approved a five-year financial forecast at its regular board meeting Monday, but there are still concerns over the future of the district’s fiscal situation, Superintendent Chris Pfister said.

Although 2014-15 will mark the fourth consecutive school year the district has been fiscally stable, Pfister said he is concerned each succeeding year could result in deficit spending.

Councilors expand dog law

CRIDERSVILLE — A new ordinance regarding the housing of dogs in the village of Cridersville is replacing a previous ordinance and could be enforced within the next month after Cridersville Village Council members voted on approving the change and having the motion sent through immediately Monday night.

The new ordinance, which had a 6-0 majority in favor of an emergency vote on the matter by council members, is in response to a dog attack back in September.

Sister Cities unveil Lengerich Garden

Amid a festive atmosphere enhanced by strings of white lights, candlelit tables and Sinatra, the Heritage Parkway was the scene of rekindled relationships and making new friends Sunday evening.

Wapakoneta Sister Cities welcomed their guests from Lengerich, Germany, although due to flight complexities, the entire delegation was unable to attend. The event began at 6:30 p.m., but the final group wasn’t due to land in Dayton until 7 p.m.

Collectors flock to coin show

The Tri-County Coin Club held its 58th Annual Coin Show Sunday in the Jr. Fair Building at the Auglaize County Fairgrounds.

About 20 dealers signed up and were available to to sell, trade and appraise coins and currency.

According to club President Gordon Coffin, most of the dealers were from the tri-county — Auglaize, Mercer and Allen county — area, but some come from further away.

Auction helps holiday program

A Quarter Auction benefitting the annual “Breakfast with Santa” children’s event was held Sunday at First English Lutheran Church Fellowship Hall, 107 West Mechanic St., in Wapakoneta.

“Breakfast with Santa,” which is celebrating its sixth year, is a free event for area children.

Sally A. Singleton, 76, of Wapakoneta, died at 11:45 a.m. on Friday, Oct. 10, 2014, at Auglaize Acres. She was born Feb. 28, 1938, the daughter of James J. and Donna M. (Croushorn) Singleton, who preceded her in death.
