Jr. ACME opens districts with win over St. Henry

ROCKFORD — The Wapakoneta Junior ACME team opened district play with a 6-2 win over St. Henry Monday.

Wapakoneta broke open the scoring in the top of the first when Logan Martin drew a leadoff walk and stole second base. Quinn Lotridge singled and got caught in an intentional rundown between first and second, allowing Martin to score.

Jarrett Koch and Martin put together successive RBI doubles in the third inning to stretch the lead to 3-0.

Redskins down Coldwater Junior ACME 11-7

Wapakoneta Redskins Junior ACME sophomore pitcher Quinn Lotridge overcame a 5-run second inning as his teammates rallied to beat the Coldwater Cavaliers Junior ACME team 11-7 Sunday night in Rockford.

Staked to a 2-0 lead when sophomore first baseman Kodi Morgan scored on a passed ball after he was walked and moved to second on a single by sophomore third baseman Jon Eaton and a walk to left fielder Taylor Gonzales. Eaton scored on a groundout by second baseman Alex Rasche.

Loud situation: Village officials receive fireworks complaints

CRIDERSVILLE — A local village has been receiving complaints about a popular holiday tradition.

Fireworks have been set off in the village of Cridersville and the police chief and mayor said there is a state law by which residents need to abide.

“Anything that flies and goes ‘boom’ is illegal in the state of Ohio,” Cridersville Police Chief John Drake said during Monday’s regular council meeting. “It woke me up at 3:30 in the morning the other night, and I had three people call my house because of it.”

Storm causes damage to grounds

The storm that passed through Wapakoneta and the rest of the county June 29 wreaked plenty of havoc on the Auglaize County Fairgrounds, Auglaize County Fairgrounds Manager Fred Piehl told members of the Auglaize County Fairboard during a regular meeting Monday.

Piehl said 15 trees on the property were lost or damaged during the storm, with several buildings also sustaining damage.

“In general, if you drove around the grounds, it was a sight to see,” Piehl said.

Why would you want to have lunch with an astronaut?

Organizers of the Run to the Moon are asking just that question of children ages 7 to14 in order to pick a couple of Wapakoneta youth to share a meal with Space Shuttle Endeavour pilot Col. Gregory H. Johnson on Friday, July 20, the 43rd anniversary of Neil Armstrong’s first steps on the moon.

Entry forms for the contest are running in the Wapakoneta Daily News, with a Saturday deadline for entries. The winners are to be determined by their answers to this question: “If you could ask Astronaut Greg Johnson one question, what would it be, and why?”

Melvin Keller, 85

Melvin G. Keller, 85, of Wapakoneta, died Saturday July 7, 2012, at his residence.
He was born Sept. 8, 1926, in Auglaize County, the son of Emma (Elsass) and Henry C. Keller, who preceded him in death.
Surviving are two brothers, Willis Keller, of Wapakoneta, and Edison Keller, of Wapakoneta; a sister, Elzena Zwiebel, of Wapakoneta; and a nephew, David (Virginia) Zwiebel, of Wapakoneta.
He was preceded in death by a brother and sister-in-law, Henry (Sandra) Keller; a half-sister, Irene King; a brother-in-law, Eugene “Whitey” Zwiebel; and a sister-in-law, Arlene Keller.

Josephine Davidson, 94

Josephine F. “Jo” Davidson, 94, of Cridersville, formerly of Wapakoneta, died at 11:35 p.m. Saturday, July 7, 2012, at Otterbein Cridersville.
She was born June 21, 1918, in DeGraff, the daughter of Nell (James) and Howard Doane, who preceded her in death. On Sept. 9, 1939, she married Glen V. Davidson, and he died May 21, 2002.

Lloyd Mathwig Jr., 67

Lloyd L. “Bud” Mathwig Jr. 67, of Lima, died at 6:17 a.m. Friday, July 6, 2012, at his residence.
He was born Oct. 7, 1944, in Caliente, Nev., the son of Rose (Smith) and Lloyd L. “Matt” Sr. Mathwig. On May 20, 2003, he married in Gatlinburg, Tenn., he married Dona Custer, and she survives in Lima.
Also surviving are four daughters, Teresa Decker, of Spencerville, Donna Medley, of Haines City, Fla., Tonya Pride, of Cairo, and Crystal Michael of Lima; and a son, Jeffrey Mathwig, of Columbus;.
He was preceded in death by two sons, Jimmy Mathwig and David Mathwig.
