Eagle Scout completes bridge before moving

While a former Wapakoneta High School student may have transferred to a school in Arkansas, members of a school activity will long remember and appreciate one of the last tasks he did.

Cody Wilges, the son of Gwen and Ed Wilges,  recently completed a bridge in the nature center behind the high school for his Eagle Scout project.

“I talked to the cross country kids and asked them if they could use a bridge for their meets and practices,” Wilges said. “They said, ‘Yes.’ ”

Doctor investigated: Woman files complaint, BCI & I handles case

A complaint, the nature of which is not being released at this time, has been made against a long-time Wapakoneta physician.

Wapakoneta Police Chief Russ Hunlock told the Wapakoneta Daily News this morning that a Wapakoneta woman made a complaint to his office about Dr. Tom Freytag at the end of May or late June.

Helping others

The community coming together is a neat thing about Servant’s Day — an organizer says.

The third annual Servants Day is set for Sept. 22, and local residents are reminded that Aug. 15 is the deadline to apply for home repair assistance through this program.

Dems open Obama re-election office in Wapak

Democrats in Auglaize County kicked off their re-election efforts for President Barack Obama against the presumed Republican candidate Mitt Romney with the grand opening of their campaign headquarters Thursday in Wapakoneta.

The local staff outlined their goals to capture voters in the predominantly Republican and conservative county in west-central Ohio.

Carl Serr, 84

Carl Ludwig Serr, 84, of rural Wapakoneta, passed away peacefully at 7:44 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 8, 2012, at his home surrounded by his family.
He was born June 25, 1928, in Auglaize County, the son of Sophia (Metz) and Otto Serr, who are deceased.
On June 29, 1952, he married Phyllis (Finley) Serr, and she survives. Phyllis and Carl and celebrated 60 years of marriage together.

Carl L. Serr, 84, of rural Wapakoneta, died at 7:44 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 8, 2012, at his residence.
Arrangements are incomplete at the Bayliff & Eley Funeral Home in Wapakoneta.

Eric Thompson, 40

August 10, 2012

Eric Douglas Thompson, 40, of Roundhead, died at 5:24 p.m. Wednesday, Aug 8, 2012, at University of Toledo Hospital Medical Center.
He was born Oct. 7, 1971, in Lima, the son of to Monica (Hall) and Jon Thompson who survive in Roundhead.
Services are at 11 a.m Saturday at Armentrout Funeral Home in Waynesfield, with the Rev. David Holbrook officiating. Burial will follow at Roundhead Cemetery.
Friends may call from 2 to 8 p.m. Friday and 10 to 11 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home.
Contributions may be given to Harco Industries or Hospice of Hardin County.

WCS farm finalist

Local farmers have joined together to nominate Wapakoneta City Schools for a rural education grant.

The district was selected as one of 22 finalists from Ohio for as much as $25,000 from the America’s Farmers Grow Rural Education grant from the Monsanto Fund, a philanthropic arm of the Monsanto Co.

Wapakoneta City Schools’ application was strengthened with community support offered by numerous farmer nominations, according to to those who selected grant finalists.

Board plans ahead

Not wanting the unexpected to happen during this year’s presidential election in November, the Auglaize County Elections Board opted Wednesday to purchase two new computers.

The computers would replace existing ones bought in 2004, which are used to program ballots and tabulate results.

“Although we’ve had no real issue with them, they are starting to get a little age on them,” Auglaize County Elections Board Director Carolyn Campbell said.

Preliminary plans for Botkins school unveiled

BOTKINS – Fanning/Howey and Associates Project Manager Randy Sprunger gave a brief update Wednesday on the new Botkins Local Schools project.

“We are on schedule as far as time is concerned,” Sprunger said during the Botkins Local School District Board of Education meeting. “We will be talking with the construction management firm to keep the process going.”
