Wapak woman dies in pedestrian-car crash on Glynwood Road

A 90-year-old Wapakoneta woman died Thursday morning crossing Glynwood Road to collect her morning newspaper.

Carolyn Blackburn, 803 Glynwood Road, apparently walked directly into the path a vehicle driven by 19-year-old Zachary Myers, of Wapakoneta, as he was driving east on Glynwood Road at approximately 7 a.m., according to a news release from the Wapakoneta Post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol (OSHP). Blackburn received life-threatening injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene by Auglaize County Coroner Dr. Thomas Freytag.

First forecasted winter storms prompt crews to be ready

Auglaize County and Wapakoneta city officials are ready for the possibility of adverse weather conditions beginning Thursday night and extending into Friday night as area residents head into the final weekend before Christmas.

The current weather forecast is calling for a winter weather mix of rain and snow coupled with high winds beginning Thursday evening  and extending into Friday morning.

Wapak board approves updates, stipend

School board policies were updated and compensation for members approved Tuesday by Wapakoneta City Schools Board of Education members.    

Compensation for the board’s five members for 2013 was set at $125 per meeting, up to a limit of 12 meetings annually.

Wapakoneta City Schools Superintendent Keith Horner said the rate has not increased since 2005.

Natural gas contract locked in

An increase is actually a decrease.

Wapakoneta residents participating in the city’s natural gas aggregation may notice an increase in the cost per thousand cubic feet (Mcf) of natural gas from their summer bills, but in reality they are paying less for natural gas than they did last winter heating season.

Safety-Service Director Bill Rains contacted American Municipal Power (AMP) officials Tuesday to determine how the natural gas costs in the city’s aggregation policy increased without city administrators receiving written notification.

A place to remember

After a Wapakoneta resident talked with his granddaughter about the tragedy at Sandy Hook Elementary School, he decided to replace some of his Christmas display this season with a memorial to the 20 children and six adults who perished at the school.

Larry Shaffer, a retired pastor, placed a cross with a white bow, an angel blowing a horn and a harp, all in white lights, in his front yard as a memorial. He said his 6-year-old granddaughter, Ella, wanted a way to show the families she was sorry for what had happened to the children Friday in the deadly shooting incident.

City clerk retires

In the fall of 1982, Carlene Koch answered a help wanted advertisement in the Wapakoneta Daily News to serve as clerk for Wapakoneta City Council.

On Monday during the last regular scheduled meeting of 2012, she bid farewell after more than 30 years serving in the position.

“I am going to miss the council members,” Koch said before breaking into a small chuckle, “but I don’t think I am going to miss the two meetings a month to keep the minutes.”

WCS to address our school safety

The Wapakoneta City Schools is extremely saddened about the events in Connecticut and our thoughts and prayers go out the the communities, school and families impacted by this tragedy. The Wapakoneta City Schools will be hosting a School Safety discussion open to the parents and the community on Wednesday evening at 6 pm in the Performing Arts Center. School and law enforcement officials will be in attendance. The purpose of this meeting is to explain what precautions we currently have in place, to answer questions if possible and perhaps hear any ideas for improved security provisions.
