Roughriders survive Redskins rally

Upon taking a commanding 40-20 lead, the St. Marys Roughriders saw their lead reduced to three, 42-39, by the Wapakoneta Redskins midway through the fourth quarter.

The Roughriders were able to hang on after making all 10 free throw attempts the rest of the way to hold off Wapakoneta for a 52-45 win Wednesday in a high school boys basketball Division II district semifinal at Liberty-Benton High School.

St. Marys' Josh Young had 11 points in the first quarter and 18 for the game. Wapakoneta was led by Corey Crawford's 14 points, while Ethan Good added 13.

4-H presents awards at annual banquet

The 4-H clubs of Auglaize County posthumously honored two former advisers with the Outstanding Adviser Award and one local company with the Friend of 4-H Award at its annual banquet Tuesday night.

8 Redskins to compete in all-star exhibition

Eight members of the Wapakoneta High School wrestling team will compete in an exhibition one week from today, as the Lima Area Wrestling Coaches Association is hosting its first ever Dream Team/All-Star Dual.

Tyler Copeland, Dallas Ambos, Dylan Plaugher, Heath Newman, Landon Hall, Brad Beemer, Jayden Hefner and Drew Robenalt will all compete on behalf of the Redskins.

The exhibition will be held at 6 p.m. March 18 at Lima Central Catholic High School, 720 S. Cable Rd., Lima.

Botkins village council update

The Botkins Village Council met Tuesday evening. They discussed plans to open the community park as well as the upcoming Veteran's Park dedication ceremony.

School delays for Wednesday, March 11

March 11, 2015

Wapakoneta, Botkins and Waynesfield-Goshen schools are on a 2-hour delay for today (Wednesday, March 11). No AM Preschool.

UPDATE: 7:45 a.m. Botkins Local School is on a two-hour delay.

UPDATE: 8:05 a.m. 

Wapakoneta City Schools are closed.

Waynesfield-Goshen Local School is closed.

Wapakoneta City Schools will have two days added to the end of the school year in addition to a make-up day on April 6.

UPDATE: 8:40 Botkins Local School is on a three-hour delay for today.

Carver faces sentencing

Today is the sentence hearing of Bernard W. Carver, 64, in the Auglaize County Common Pleas Court.

Carver is charged with 15 counts of an illegal use of a minor in nudity-oriented material of performance and voyeurism. In all, Carver is looking at 14 years in prison if Judge Frederick Pepple decides to sentence him to the maximum term.

Schlegel earns 2nd career 1st-team all-league honor

Youngstown State senior Heidi Schlegel was named a First-Team All-Horizon League selection for the second straight season, as the all-league rosters were announced Monday.

The 2010 Wapakoneta High School graduate is the fifth player in Penguins women’s basketball history to be first-team all-conference twice in a career.

Schlegel, a Wapakoneta native, finished the regular season ranked third in the Horizon League in scoring and rebounding with per-game averages of 17.9 and 9.6.
