Robert P. Koch, 92

Robert P. Koch, 92, of 1210 West High St., Saint Marys, Ohio, died at 11 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 7, 2014, at Joint Township District Memorial Hospital in Saint Marys. He was born Jan. 10, 1922, in Wapakoneta, the son of Gus and Ann (Kachelreis) Koch. He married Jeanne Quellhorst on April 26, 1945, and she preceded him in death on Oct. 11, 1958. He then married Lois Bowers, and she preceded him in death.

Agnes V. Schmerge, 60

September 9, 2014

Agnes V. Schmerge, 60, of St. Marys, passed away peacefully at Heritage Manor in Minster on Sept. 8, 2014, at 6:35 a.m. She was born on March 5, 1954, in St. Marys, to Alvin and Dolores (Otting) Schulze, who preceded her in death. She married Jim Schmerge on May 14, 1977, and he survives at the residence. 

Clarence Willard Nance, 83

Clarence Willard Nance, 83, of Waynesfield, died on Friday, Sept. 5, 2014, at Lima Memorial Hospital. Mr. Nance was born in Lima on Sept. 14, 1930, to Henry and Maggie Mae (McElroy) Nance. 

Electric bills going up

Electric consumers in Wapakoneta will see an increase in their electric bills.

City council passed an ordinance Monday night authorizing the city to pass along the state-mandated kilowatt-hour tax on to consumers.

First-Ward Councilman James Neumeier voiced the only no vote. Neumeier had stated at previous council meetings that passing the tax on to consumers took away any advantage consumers within the city limits had over those outside the city.

Rotary takes ALS challenge

Each with their own bucket of ice water, members of the Rotary Club of Wapakoneta lined up in front of the Rotary Gazebo in Harmon Park to perform the “ALS Challenge” in Wapakoneta.

“It’s been something that’s been going on around the world,” Rotary Club Comunity Service Chair Larry Jones said. “You can see it on the Internet — all over the place. It’s a pretty ingenious way of making money, if you think about it.”

W-G board nixes arming workers

WAYNESFIELD — The Waynesfield-Goshen Board of Education voted against authorizing employees to carry firearms on school grounds Monday night and will continue to “explore other options” regarding school safety, Superintendent Chris Pfister said.

Village mulls dog issue

CRIDERSVILLE — After several recent events regarding aggressive dogs, Auglaize County Dog Warden, Russ Bailey, attended the Cridersville Village Council meeting Monday to help address questions from council members and residents.

Toward the beginning of the meeting Mayor Lorali Myers explained the dog warden was asked to attend the meeting to help shed explain different options the village has regarding adopting a new ordinance to try to address current problems with local dogs.

Bath defeats Wapakoneta in matchup of unbeatens

LIMA — Two undefeated teams early in the 2014 varsity girls soccer season met for a Western Buckeye League showdown Monday.

The Wapakoneta Redskins and the Bath Ladycats — programs which are trending positively in recent years — were each 6-0-0 and receiving votes in the state coaches poll entering the game Monday.

KENTON — For the several hundred fans who were unable or unwilling to return to Kenton for the remainder of the suspended game Saturday afternoon, well, life is full of regrets.

The final 18-plus minutes of the resumed varsity football game between Wapakoneta and Kenton was a classic finish, one that saw the Redskins score a go-ahead touchdown with 6.7 seconds left in the game to steal a 15-14 win in the Western Buckeye League opener at Kenton High School’s Robinson Field.
