Two Wapakoneta High School seniors recently received top honors and are being recognized for their academic achievements.
Chris Schwartz and Joey Jose have been named Commended Students in the 2012 National Merit Scholarship Program.
Approximately 34,000 commended students throughout the nation are being recognized for this honor.
Schwartz and Jose placed in the top 5 percent among more than 1.5 million students who entered the 2012 competition by taking the 2010 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT).
Donna J. Haines, 80, 1414 Nagel Street, St. Marys, died at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 2, 2011, at Joint Township District Memorial Hospital, in Saint Marys, following a brief illness.
She was born Jan. 18, 1931, in St. Marys, the daughter of Adrian â€śHapâ€ť and Grace (Langsdon) Howell.
She married Richard Haines II on June 10, 1951, and he survives at the residence.
She is also survived by a daughter, Deborah Stienecker, of St, Marys; and a son, Richard Haines III, of St. Marys.
She was preceded in death by her parents and one brother, Ronald Howell.
Donald E. Shroyer, 64, of Wapakoneta, died at 12:25 p.m., Wednesday, Nov. 2, 2011, at St. Ritaâ€™s Medical Center in Lima.
He was born April 5, 1947, in Bellefontaine, the son of Jennie (Miller) and Donald C. Shroyer, who preceded him in death. On Jan. 14, 1967, he married Patricia K. Evans, and she survives in Wapakoneta.
On more than one occasion and by more than one pundit, the Western Buckeye League was described as a â€śgauntletâ€ť in 2011.
Four WBL teams â€” Wapakoneta, Elida, Ottawa-Glandorf and Kenton â€” qualified for the playoffs, and three others â€” Bath, Shawnee and Defiance were still mathematically alive going into Week 10.
But now the second season begins.
Wapak will face the Franklin Wildcats in a Division II regional quarterfinal at 7:30 Friday night at Franklin High School.
Reaching an agreement and developing a plan with an electric company to bring a large line to help power a potential end-user in Wapakonetaâ€™s Jobs Ready Sites is critical, several Wapakoneta Area Economic Development Council (WAEDC) board members say.
WAEDC Executive Director Greg Myers said it is vital for the city to have an agreement or at least a plan in place with American Electric Power (AEP) to provide additional electricity to the 471-acre West Central Ohio Industrial Center site, if a company decides to locate there and requires a large electrical load.
BOTKINS â€” Botkins Local School District residents will cast their votes on a 7.99-mill property tax levy on Nov. 8 to build a new school and provide money to maintain those facilities for a maximum of 35 years.
The bond levy will raise the approximate $6.9 million local share of the $24.4 million total project. The school district has done several presentations to the public during the last several months so voters can make an educated vote during the election.
School Superintendent Connie Schneider said district residents are being presented with an opportunity of a lifetime.
With Christmas less than two months away, local shops are preparing for holiday shoppers this weekend.
Wapakonetaâ€™s annual Holiday Open Houses will be held this weekend throughout different shops, businesses and churches in Wapakoneta.

Ivan C. Klopfenstein, 76, of Wapakoneta, died at 11:58 p.m. Monday, Oct. 31, 2011, at St. Ritaâ€™s Medical Center in Lima.
Arrangements are incomplete at Bayliff & Eley Funeral Home in Wapakoneta.
Ruth L. (Wollam) Casanova, 84, Douglassville, Pa., formerly of Norton, died Sunday, Oct. 30, 2011, at Pottstown Memorial Medical Center.
She was born in Hood River, Ore., the daughter of Gail (Hamilton) and Harry Wollam. She married Albert J. Casanova, who is deceased.
She was preceded in death by a son.
Private service will be held and a date was not released. Burial will follow at Hamilton Bethel Cemetery near Mendon.
